Latest Obsessions - Lego Indiana Jones

Since we rented it on Saturday, Lachlan and I have been obsessively finishing Lego Indiana Jones. Presently, we’ve completed story mode and are working on collecting all the extra items. I think we’re sitting around 80-something percent. Not to shabby considering all of our gameplay time is broken up by babies and other important things.

Here’s the breakdown:

Story
The story is the same story as the first three Indiana Jones movies, so some extent. If you’ve played one of the Lego Star Wars games you’ll understand what I’m talking about but if not, you need to understand that they Legofy everything. When Dr. Jones SR gets shot, his legs come off and walk around. There are bits in the game that never happend in the movies, and lots of the movies are missing. If you haven’t seen the three Indy movies, you probably will only get the basic idea of what’s going on, but let’s face it, these games weren’t made for non fans.

Chracters
Whilst you only get a few key characters from the movies in normal gameplay, like Indy, Willie, Dr. Jones, etc., you can unlock virtually every Lego man you encounter in story mode and use them in Free Play mode. Many of the characters do exactly the same thing, and there are a handfull that are just the same characters with different costumes. Some of the extras your characters have are Indy’s whip, all girls can jump higher, characters with wrenches fix things, characters with shovels can dig up things, characters with bazookas or grenades can blow special explosives objects up, Willie’s scream can shatter glass, some have guns, some have brawns, the list goes on.

Gameplay
All of the characters play their respective classes play realatively well. There are a few issues here and there, but nothing that stands out or will limit your experience. The levels and all of the little gameplay mechanics are again, quite good. Not really ‘the greatest thing ever’ and not insufferably bad. There’s a balance between puzzle, platforming and action segments. The difficulty on these ranges from very easy (the puzzles) to damn near impossible (platforming segments that have issues). Luckily for this, there is something about this game that makes it really, really easy. There is very little consequences for dying. Worst case scenario: You lose some bolts and have to restart a bit. Thats it. There are no lives, and most of the levels have more then enough bolts to allow for you to die and still reach True Adventurer. If you happen to fail at that, just return on Free Play mode where it’s expontentally easier.

Unlockables
As I said before there are tonnes of characters for you to unlock. On top of that, if you collect all the Artifact pieces (10 per level) and all of the Mail (1 per level) you can unlock cheats and 3 bonus levels. Collecting all the stuff to unlock this takes a bit of time and therefore ads to the replay value of the game.

The verdict
This is a very good, very fun game. If you’re a fan of Lego games or of Indiana Jones definatly check it out.
If I had to give it a score, it’d be 4.5/5 but only because the game kept killing me.

What I think of Soul Calibur 4

Lachlan rented Soul Calibur 4 the other day which means it’s been on the tv a lot.

From what I’ve seen it’s a pretty good game. The graphics are nice, the gameplay and characters are balanced and solid and the announcer is as retarded as always. There are some problem, like some of the moves you’ve loved from the characters have been made harder to do or added to the critical finishes. (I’m speaking mainly about Taki’s jump attack where she lands on you and stabs.)

I found that I was not able to play with old favourites in the same way I used them in the past and I’m going to have to relearn all of Taki’s moves, a chacter I had previously mastered. That being said, button mashing characters like Seong Mi-Na are just as easy to play with.

From what I’ve seen and played it’s a really good game and I want to check out more of it. I have always been a fan of the series and this one lives up to the hype.

Just in case you were wondering, the Star Wars characters are pretty good but don’t belong in Soul Calibur.

Bioshock Big Daddy Standee

What this is:
A cardboard Bioshock promotional standee from EB Games. This is the same as any cardboard advertisement you’d find in a store.

Big Daddy Standee 01

Where it originated:
I’d imagine someone from Microsoft’s PR department decided they wanted to advertise the game in this manner. They were sent out to EB Games and probably many other big game retailers around North America.

How we got it:
We simply asked to have it after the store was done with it. Thankfully the employees at our local EB Games are still quite kind to us despite Erika no longer working there.

Is it rare/valuble:
It’s somewhat rare considering only one would be sent to every store and they’re typically destroyed after they’re run is through. (By request of most companies to stop people from reselling them on Ebay.) That being said, it’s probably not very valuble and wouldn’t sell for much, if anything. (Possibly due to it’s large size and therefore high shipping cost.)

See another photo of it after the jump!
